#OurAlbion

My Why - Cassidy Porter

Being born and raised in Albion, I can not imagine my life without it. Albion has completely shaped who I am as a person. I went to Albion Public Schools through 8th grade and then extended my educational career in Albion in college. My lineage extends beyond just my personal life connections, as I am a fifth generation Albionite. So caring and loving for this town has been passed down for generations. So when I need to create a capstone project through the Build Albion Fellows, I knew I had to highlight my love for Albion. Albion has consistently found its way into my college art work, so instead of trying to compete with this passion I decided to work with it. Within brainstorming ideas, I found that I consistently was interested in the female voice of our town. I find that at times the women Albion work quietly, so with my power and voice I wanted to amplify those around me. That is why I choose the women of Albion to be the voices of #Our Albion.

Artist Biography

Cassidy is a graduating senior at Albion College focusing on business and art, along with countless other jobs helping her get through her college career. She was born and raised in Albion, Michigan, creating an evolving balance between her childhood in Albion and the role of being a student in the same community.

Her passion for photography started at a young age when she received her first digital camera at 12 years old. From there, she learned about her passions for portrait photography and the excitement of using film cameras. Cassidy has completed numerous photographic portraits sessions for graduating seniors, as well as focusing on aspects of portraits through event photography. Most of her photography skills were self-taught until she reached college where she began her formal study, and developed interests in ceramics and printmaking. Her current work invokes empowerment and recognition of women who are the backbone of Albion, and creates love and positivity towards the town through photography.
